Founding Principles of Hatha Yoga

शोधनं दृढ़तम् चैव स्थैर्यम् धैर्यम् च अंगलाघवम्।
प्रत्यक्षं च निर्लिप्तं च घटस्य सप्तसाधनम्॥
śodhanaṁ dṛढ़tam caiva sthairyam dhairyam ca aṁgalāghavam|
pratyakṣaṁ ca nirliptaṁ ca ghaṭasya saptasādhanam||

Hatha Yoga is based on the balancing of -

  • HAM and KSHAM
  • Pingala and Ida nadis
  • Surya and Chandra  nadis
  • Prana and Manas shakti
  • Yang and Yin principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous system

This Harmonization is attained by observing the following seven principles -

1. Purification - Shat Karmas (Shodhanam)
2. Rejuvenation - Asanas, Mudras & Bandhas (Dridhtam)
3. Harmonization - Pranayama (Anga Laghavam)
4. Crystalization - Pratyahara (Sthairyam)
5. Resolution - Dharana (Dhairyam)
6. Contemplation - Dhyana (Pratyaksham)
7. Dissolution/Absorption - Samadhi (Nirliptam)
